Boca Raton resident contests DUI allegations after vehicle plunges into community lake |
Marissa Leah Katz, a 45-year-old resident of Boca Raton, is challenging charges of driving under the influence and careless driving following an incident where her Jeep submerged into a lake within the Woodfield Country Club.
On the evening of January 25, 2026, authorities responded to reports of a vehicle in the water at 5600 NW 55th Diagonal, located inside the Woodfield community. Witnesses recounted that a white Jeep approached the intersection at high speed, failed to slow down, jumped the curb, and plunged into the lake. Katz was observed exiting the partially submerged vehicle shortly after the crash.
Upon arrival, officers noted Katz's red, glassy eyes and detected a strong odor of alcohol. She reportedly displayed a "demanding" demeanor, repeatedly stating her desire to go home. Katz agreed to perform field sobriety exercises but struggled significantly, swaying during instructions and failing to touch her finger to her nose on multiple attempts.
Subsequent breath tests allegedly revealed blood alcohol levels of .288 and .297, more than three times Florida's legal limit of .08. Following the breath test, Katz reportedly refused to answer further questions without an attorney present.
Despite photographic evidence of her vehicle in the lake and witness accounts, Katz's attorney has filed a notice indicating her intent to utilize the discovery process provided by Florida's criminal procedure rules. A hearing is scheduled for February 6th.
The Woodfield Country Club is a prestigious residential community in Boca Raton, known for its luxurious amenities and family-friendly environment. The incident has sparked discussions among residents about safety and responsible driving within the community.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains attentive to the case's developments and its potential implications for neighborhood safety standards. |
