Boca Raton is taking steps to tighten its Commercial-Industrial Multi-family Development ordinance amid concerns that developers are bypassing its intent by counting resident-focused amenities like gyms as public businesses.

The existing ordinance encourages mixing real retail or service businesses into residential conversions to keep neighborhoods lively.

At the center of the current debate is the Bocora at City Center project, where a private gym was redesigned as a public one to meet requirements—drawing criticism for not serving the true spirit of public commerce.

City planners have now recommended excluding gyms, fitness centers, and tutoring services from qualifying as commercial components, stressing that these don’t deliver the retail presence the ordinance intends.

The proposed revisions would also mandate businesses operate at least 45 hours weekly and be directly accessible and visibly separate, ensuring authentic, community-oriented retail activity.

The City Council will soon decide whether to move forward with these changes.

A Boca Raton nurse, Alexis "Lexie" Backer Lawler, has been suspended from practicing in Florida after posting inflammatory social media videos directed at White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Lawler, who previously worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, was fired following a video where she explicitly wished severe childbirth injuries upon Leavitt.

The Florida Department of Health swiftly issued an emergency suspension of her nursing license, and Attorney General James Uthmeier underscored that her actions were a clear violation of medical ethics.

Additional alarming posts on Lawler’s social media, including language tied to threats and controversial hashtags, have heightened concerns over her professional judgment.

Baptist Health South Florida affirmed its commitment to compassionate, unbiased care and distanced itself from Lawler’s remarks.

The case has ignited conversations about social media responsibility and ethical expectations for healthcare professionals.

Jon Pearlman, founder of 'Save Boca,' has launched a fresh petition effort to challenge Boca Raton’s downtown redevelopment deal—a move that would lease city land for 99 years to Terra Group and Frisbie Group in exchange for funding a new government campus.

Pearlman’s group mistrusts city officials’ intentions, fearing the planned March 2026 referendum on the project may never happen.

Mayor Scott Singer insists the public vote will proceed as scheduled and be binding, accusing Pearlman of stirring unnecessary doubt and misinformation.

Critics, however, note that the city contract already contains language for what happens if no vote occurs, fueling suspicion and calls for direct action.

The petition targets the ordinance behind the developer contract, seeking enough signatures to either force a council repeal or trigger a ballot question, possibly resulting in two redevelopment-related questions next March.

Tensions remain high as both sides push their case while residents debate their city’s future.

Boca Raton leaders have unanimously greenlit a $500,000 incentive to attract a major quantum computing company from California, hoping to relocate its headquarters to the Boca Raton Innovation Campus (BRiC).

The recruitment effort, nicknamed Project Vernon, is projected to create 100 high-paying jobs over the next five years, each averaging at least $125,000.

City Manager Mark Sohaney stressed the financial upside, noting that state incentives would multiply Boca’s commitment twelvefold.

The company’s identity remains undisclosed, but it is described as a publicly traded leader in quantum computing currently weighing moves to Florida, Tennessee, or North Carolina.

Excitement is fueled by a prominent quantum tech conference soon coming to The Boca Raton resort, highlighting the city’s innovation legacy dating back to IBM’s arrival in 1967.
